K.TURYSOV INSTITUTE OF GEOLOGICAL SURVEY

Geological Survey, Exploration and Mineral Depospecting
Hydrogeology, Engineering Geology and Ecology
Wells Drilling Technology and Technique
Geophysics
General Geology, Mineralogy and Petrography

The Institute has a rich history that goes back to the period of higher technical education formation in the country and creation of the Kazakh Mining and Smelting Institute (now KazNTU). Geological Survey Institute was set up on the base of Geological Survey Faculty in 2003. In 2006 the Institute was given the name of an outstanding public figure, scientist and geologist Karatai Turysov. Since September of 2008 year the institute of Geological Survey has been headed by Omirserykov Murat Shukeevich. The Institute comprises the Departments, which traditionally form the base of geological education in Kazakhstan. They are:

  • Department of Geological Survey, Exploration and Mineral Deposits Prospecting.
  • Department of Geophysics.
  • Department of Hydrogeology, Engineering Geology and Ecology.
  • Department of General Geology, Mineralogy and Petrography.
  • Department of Wells Drilling Technology and Technique.

Among the Institute graduates there are 2 Heroes of Socialist Labor, 4 Lenin Prize winners and 22 State Prize laureates, 11 Academicians, 4 RK Ministers of Geology, 2 PJC Academy of Sciences Presidents, 4 Honored Workers of Science and Technique, 120 discoverers of deposits and many Heads of the leading industrial and scientific organizations.
At present more than 1000 students from all regions of the Republic study at the Institute. 3 Full Members of the RK NAS, 19 Professors - Doctors and Candidates of Sciences, 32 Docents and more than 40 lecturers work at the Institute.
There are some 30 specialized laboratories and lecture halls equipped with all the necessary devices and computer hard- and software. The unique Mineralogy Museum is the pride of the University. Theoretical studies are accompanied with practical work at geological, geophysical and wells drilling training polygons, located in Kapshagai, Kordai, Zailiisk Ala-Tau mountains as well as at the advanced enterprises of the Industry, located in various regions of Kazakhstan.
Training is given in the State and Russian languages, in day-time and part-time forms. Students may take an advanced course a foreign language at their choice. High level of training, close ties of the Institute with industrial enterprises and scientific organizations guarantees employment and constant demand for the Institute graduates in geological survey and oil industries. The Institute admits applicants in the following specialities:
050706 - Geological Survey, Exploration and Mineral Deposits Prospecting: survey of geological maps, exploration and mineral deposits prospecting, elucidation of regularities of deposits' formation in the earth-crust, definition of their reserves and prospects.
180240 - Geophysical Methods of Exploration and Prospecting: exploration and deposits prospecting and exploration on the land, in the sea and from the air. Areas of perspective deposits location are defined with the use of special geophysical devices. The investigations are based on different qualities of earth-crust layers and minerals they contain. Having studied changes in the readings of geophysical fields (magnetic, heat, gravitation, etc.), geophysicists can point out the deposit location with greater precision. 180540 - Seismology. Engineers-seismologists study and forecast earthquakes.
180440 - Hydrogeology, Engineering Geology and Geoecology. Exploration of underground  waters,   development  of engineering  measures on prevention or minimization of negative impacts of human activities on the environment.
1806 - Mineral Deposits Prospecting Technology and Techniques. Specialists
investigate possibilities  and  advantages  of various ways  of drilling and new technologies development for drilling works.
050805 - Water   Resources   and   Water   Consumption.   Development   of recommendations for surface and underground water consumption.
Specialities of geological profile are in great demand nowadays. Every year about 300 engineers graduate from the Institute. Geological and geophysical companies display great interest in the graduates, hold presentations and contests for their grants. Currently over 20 students receive grants from the following companies: Shlumberger, Shell, AgipKKO, Kazakhoil, Kumkol Munai, Aktobemunaigas, Azimut Energy Service, DANC, Geoken. There are also scholarships named after K.Turysov, Sh.Esenov, T.Akishev.
