In 1942 Israil Ya.Brook - the graduating student of Leningrad Mining Institute, the ex-director of Irkutsk Mining and Metallurgical Institute, the experienced organizer of High Schools was appointed as a Director of KazMMI. The main important problem was the staffing of Kazakh Mining and Metallurgical Institute by qualified faculty. The workers of evacuated High Schools of the country, among them Leningrad Mining Institute, Moscow Mining Institute, Leningrad Chemical and Technological Institute, Leningrad Electro Technical Institute were took an active part in decision of problem. In August and November, 1941, the two echelons came to Almaty, which got students, tutors, professors to KazMMI and also delivered the laboratory equipments from Moscow Institute of Non Ferrous Metals and Gold. There had been a merging of two High Technical Schools. Independently arrived 250 evacuated and 100 students from related technical high schools from western districts of the country were accepted to the Institute. Admission and placement of students and faculty of MINF&G were required a lot of efforts. The basic principle at placing of students was the national proverb: “he more the merrier”. All KazMMI students were admitted in the state scholarship. Premises of club, sports hall and part of hostel were set aside for accommodation. The most part of professors, tutors and their families were placed in single habitable house in 49, Furmanov Street. Others are gave the rooms in the student’s hostels. The professors, doctors of sciences: S.I.Gubkin, P.S.Tytov, G.O.Yerchakovsky, V.I.Trushlevich, V.A.Vanyukov, Ya.S.Umansky, B.V.Nekrasov, A.N. Krestovnikov, I.M.Voronkov, V.S.Makarov, N.H.Ahieser, I.M.Babakov, Ostashenko-Kudryavtcev, A.S.Ilovaysky and others are worked through the difficulties in the Institute. Their staying in KazMMI are played the great positive role as in the improvement of teaching quality so in the rendering to the enterprisers of Kazakhstan at the solving of job-related issue. With the arrival of Moscow Institute of Non-ferrous Metals and Gold were significant changes in the internal structure of KazMMI.

At the end of 1941 was organized the forth department – technological: “Technology of non ferrous metals and alloys”, “Production economy of non ferrous metals”. In that time were organized two new laboratories: “Physical metallurgy” and “Thermal refining of lithium and alloys”. There was opened the cabinet of metal refining under pressure. In 1942-1943 was organized the fifth – oil department with specializations: Oil development business and Geology of oil deposits. But in 1945- 1946 this department closed because of absence of high qualified personnel, specialists on geology and exploitation of oil field. Part of students was passed to Grozny Oil Institute, and others were transformed to other departments.

1939-1940 651 61 3991 88
1940-1941 649 75 3935 71

1942-1943 1015 101 2694 70

In spite of serious difficulties of military time, weak point of material base, the decrease at significant growing of student contingents, faculty, and the staff of the institute was able to successfully solve the assigned tasks in training of specialists. This comparison table is visually indicated the contingent of students, tutors and graduates in 1939-1940, 1942-1943 academic years. As you see, in the years of war the graduation of engineers had grown.

In general, four graduations of war years gave the industry 512 engineers trained in eight specialties prospecting, mining and steel profiles, whereas the five pre-war editions of 258 engineers were trained in four specialities – “Geology and prospecting of mineral deposits”, “Engineering Geology and Hydrogeology”, “Exploration of ore and alluvial deposits”, “ Non-Ferrous Metallurgy”.

In 1942 the Institute carried out the first graduation of mining engineers. Their training was begun in 1938 in mining department. In addition, in 1942 – 1943 had been training 55 engineers-dressers, economists and technologist in production of non ferrous metals and alloys. The huge help is rendered by evacuated scientists in training of scientific and pedagogical personnel and their growth. During the war years defended the candidate dissertations from the number of tutors KazMMI: S.P.Kravchenko, L.V.Gul’nitcky, B.R.Klyko, Kym Gy-Shen, G.K.Sinyavsky, P.N.Torsky, S.N.Baraboshkin. KazMMI staff gave help to the front of acting army by cash means to the sum of 700 000 rubles for construction of tank column, for cloth, for gifts, and also included the subscription and surrender of stock, subscription to a loan, post a parcel, assignments to defence fund and many others. The KazMMI made a feasible contribution in winning of victory over an enemy by implementation of effective scientific results in years of the Great Patriotic War. In the sub department had carried out 65 major research and 6 prospecting topographic and mining works, and the most part of work was successfully realized in the production, then in the project development of new complexes, workshops and mines. The major scientific and technical problems were settled in the non ferrous metallurgy. The scientists of central high schools, evacuated to Almaty had taken direct parts in major scientific researches. By initiative and under the leadership of Honored Science and Technic Worker of KazSSR, doctor of technical sciences, professor A.V.Brichkin was worked out the project of rational opening of second, rich, southwest deposit of Leninogorsk ore operation, saving of 8 million rubles. Under the leadership of A.V.Brichkin was carried out the crossing of Leninogorks mine to the topslicing, saving of 8 800 000 rubles in a year and increasing of mine productivity for 25 – 30% and in Tekely mine is changed the supporting system and development scheme of blocks, the deployment of its full capacity of the mine for six months instead of one year and reduced loss of valuable ore by 5%. On September, 1943 is realized the system and gave the annual economy of 3 200 000 rubles. Doctor of technic sciences, professor B.B.Stender was suggested and carried out experimental tests with the using of converter gas for the production of sulfuric acid.

The organization of hydro-electro-production on the Balkhash copper-smelting plant savings of sulfuric acid, at a given plant capacity, ranged from 4 to 6 million rubles. On 5, November, 1944 was accepted this proposal by the Ministry non-ferrous metallurgy.
